How to Buy a Kindle Book without a Kindle (for your iPhone or iPad)

There are a lot of new iPhones and iPads floating around after the holidays. If you are one of those new owners, you might be surprised to know that you can read a Kindle book on your device. No need to own a Kindle.

This blog has touched on some of this before, when we talked about getting samples, for example. But I neglected to do a tutorial specifically for getting a Kindle book on your device, so I’m going to rectify that, now. (thanks, Gina!)

On your computer, go to Amazon. If you do not have an account, sign up for one. You’ll link this to your credit card for buying books (and other things) from Amazon.

Screen shot 2013-01-03 at 5.58.12 PMIf you have not already, install the Kindle App on your iPhone or iPad. The Kindle App is free in the iTunes store. It is this Kindle App that allows you to buy (or collect free) Kindle books, and read them on your device.

You will need to register your device with Amazon. They will walk you through that process when you get started with the app.

With a Kindle app, and an Amazon account, you are now ready to send books to your iPhone or iPad.

Head over to Amazon, and navigate to a book that you are interested in.

(Keep in mind that there are always daily deals and sales. As a savvy shopper, you should be able to nab books at great prices. Make sure you always check out the deals! There are daily deals. And monthly deals.)

Once you have determined a book that you would like to buy, make sure that the “Kindle edition” is highlighted.

Then look over to the top right. You’ll see a spot to select your device … just below a ‘buy’ button. It will say “deliver to” and you can toggle to select your iPhone or iPad to appear in that spot.

When you buy your book (or maybe you’ve found a great one for free) it will be sent directly to your device. Click to buy, wait a minute or two, and then check your Kindle app on your iPhone or iPad. The book will appear there, ready and waiting for you.

  1. Haven’t had time for reading ‘anything’ the past week or so; too busy ‘catching up’ with family and friends…. Hope the New Year came in for you in a special way, Kathy… 🙂

    • Thank you for sharing this. The iPad is a awesome device. I now have a Fire as well, and I’m enjoying it, too….. but differently. (eventually I’ll be discussing this on this blog).

I have a friend who just got an IPad. She would like to have the Kindle app on it for free books. Is there a way to set up an Amazon account for it that does not require you to link to a credit card? They do not have credit cards.

    • She would enjoy the Kindle app on her iPad… it is wonderful. As for setting up an account without a credit card, I suggest you call Amazon’s customer service for their answer. I will say … once you have an account, there are ways to pay w/o using a credit card. You can apply an Amazon gift card to your account and use that balance. You can turn in change to a Coin Star machine and get Amazon credit at no charge. And of course there are many books offered free for the Kindle and Kindle app. But for the initial set up, I would call Customer Service. They are usually very helpful.

        • I often apply a gift card to my account and use that to pay for purchases instead of charging to my card. You are always given the option at check out. Good luck, and I wish her great fun with her new iPad!

I'd love to hear what you think!
