Long Overdue Award Post

I do appreciate the blog love. I do. I really really do. From Millan.Net

I apologize for my lateness. I have such good intentions, but time just gets away from me. I admire those of you who do such beautiful award posts. (I tend to get confused and flustered.)

But let’s not confuse my procrastination with lack of interest in award honor. I do appreciate each and every nomination. I’m just a very poor multi-tasker!!

So, apologies aside, let’s get started!!

Blog of the Year Award 2012

Blog of the Year Award banner 600

From the creators of the award:

The ‘rules’ for this award are simple:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award – http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/ and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!
Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different.
When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star!

Blog of the Year Award 6 star jpeg
There are a total of 6 stars to collect.
Which means that you can check out your favourite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

Now back to me. 🙂

First of all, I’d like to thank Jamie at Grandmother’s Musings, Nicole at NMNPHX, and Marsha at tchistorygal for all nominating me for this award.

All three blogs are ones that I visit regularly. Please pay them all a visit, you’ll be so glad you did. All three are marvelous women, and I am proud to call them my blogging-friends.

Here are a few blogs that I think deserve this great award:

Daniela at the Lantern Post. Daniela is an awesome writer, with a wealth of ‘life experience’ to share. She blogs in English, although this is not her native language. (wow, right?!) Her posts are always interesting and thoughtful.

Carolyn at ABC of Spirit Talk. Carolyn is a lot of fun, and a source of all kinds of wisdom.

Marsha at Who’s Your Granny. Poor Marcia has just had a horrible tree disaster on her property. Please visit her and cheer her up! 🙂

Yvonne at Misifusa’s Blog. She is a spunky, inspiring survivor who always spreads joy with everything she writes. She also has an active online greeting card business which you can learn about through her blog.

Pat at A New Day. Pat has been adjusting to some life changes and she is quite a lady. She is a traveler, a photographer and a person who inspires with every blog post.

And now …. in an embarrassment of riches, I must admit that I have several other awards that I want to acknowledge and pass along. However, I will make them a separate blog post as they deserve full attention. (hopefully before 2013, but …. considering my lack of multi-tasking skills, and the holidays upon us….let’s not hold our collective breath!)

Brief Intermission to Share a Bit of Blog Love

With much gratitude I am pleased to accept two blogging awards.

Nicole, at NMNPHX, has nominated me for her Spotlight Award. This is a rare honor, as the sole “giver” is Nicole, and she only highlights a few blogs a month. This month I am delighted to be among her chosen few. There are absolutely no requirements for this Award, but I couldn’t let this opportunity go by without calling attention to Nicole and her awesome blog. She is an aspiring writer, taking her readers on her journey as she grows in her craft.

I have also been nominated for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award by The Retiring Sort. Her’s is a fun and informative blog about all aspects of retirement, from travel to financial planning to finding her misplaced glasses 🙂 .

The rules for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award are:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you. Done!

2. Attach the Award to your site. Done!

3. Share seven random things about yourself: I can’t start the day without a cup of coffee; I am trying to simplify my life; My favorite supermarket ice cream is Edys Light Chocolate Chip; Cats make me sneeze; My “to do” lists are longer than the days to do the doing; I can’t eat raw tomatoes, but I can eat them cooked (which is a good thing, because…..); I consider Pizza a must-have food group.

4. Nominate 15 blogs. Let them know that they have been nominated and how to accept the award. Done!

Here are my nominees. This is a mix of new bloggers, new-to-me bloggers, and new subscribers that I am just getting to know. For me this is the hardest part of the Award process. I find it almost impossible to make choices. Our blogging community is so rich with entertaining, educational, interesting, artistic and informative blogs, I just don’t know how select only a few. I wish I could “pay it forward” to absolutely everyone. 🙂

If you are a subscriber of mine, you probably noticed that I published a post about 12 hours ago, but when you clicked on it, you were brought to a “this page doesn’t exist” page.

Here is what happened.

I was working on my post about the most recent round of awards. I knew I was very late in acknowledging the wonderful bloggers who nominated me, and I was feeling the pressure. I wanted to put together a good and thorough post, and get it up over the weekend.

But I was tired. I’m a morning person, and I was working on this at night. Anyone who has put together an award post knows that it takes a lot of tweaking, including links and images, etc.

Several times I hit “Preview” to see how it was looking.

But through my sleepy haze, I hit the wrong button …. I hit Publish.

The post was incomplete, and now it was “out there”. Yikes!!

I quickly “copied” the whole thing (to hopefully save myself from having to do a complete re-write), and then I went to “edit” and “trashed” it.

With that action I gave my readers the “page does not exist” page. Although…. I do think it is possible that some people may have received the incomplete post. Sloppy, sloppy me. I apologize if you received that bit of glop.

A lesson learned ….. Don’t do computer things when you are tired!!!

This made me think of other errors, like the famous email “send” to the wrong person. Ouch. This is bad enough in a personal situation, but at work, well, it could mean your job.

Two recent email goofs came from very public sources.

Last December the New York Times sent out an email to 8.6 MILLION people instead of the 300 subscribers it was meant for. Sent by an employee, it created of flurry of troubles and worries about hacking, spam and security. You can read about it here.
It was nothing more than an error. A “pushed the wrong button” kind of error.

Another famous email blunder happened just a few months ago at the Eastern Michigan University. A message that was meant for 100 students was sent out to the ENTIRE student body. The message? It was a notification that due to poor academic performance, the student was dismissed from the University. Out. Kaput. Gone. Vamoose.

Imagine the panic when students saw that email arrive in their mailboxes! The President issued an apology and it was determined to be an error (oops). You can read the entire text of that frightful email here.

So …. bottom line….. be careful what you do online when you are not up to par.

The results could be really, really messy. 🙂

A Brief Intermission for a LOT of (very late) Blog Love

I’m a bit (actually a LOT) tardy in this. I am very sorry … one moment I was a little late, and then suddenly I was very late.

I have been honored recently with four different awards and I am just now getting around to thanking the awesome bloggers who were kind enough to pass them on to me. I thoroughly appreciate the honor and I am very grateful. I don’t know how this got away from me, but let me take this opportunity to send out my gratitude and to pass these wonderful awards on to other deserving bloggers.

The Reader Appreciation Award

Nicole at NMNPHX has nominated me for the Reader Appreciation Award. Nicole is a serious writer with a thoroughly enjoyable blog. She is friendly and enthusiastic about writing and her enthusiasm spreads to other topics as well. You can (and should) visit Nicole here.

The qualifications for the Reader Appreciation award include telling 7 things about yourself and nominating 5 blogs.

1. I love to travel.

2. I REALLY love to travel.

3. I don’t like to fly (which makes nos. 1 and 2 a bit difficult).

4. Caffeine is not my friend.

5. I once drove for hours to find Millard Fillmore’s birthplace. It was in the middle of nowhere and easy to miss. Really. Don’t even bother to google it.

6. Guilty pleasure: Coconut smidgens from Gertrude Hawk.

7. I’m a morning person.

The Liebster Blog Award

Grandmother Musings and The Cathie Barash Blog have both nominated me for the Liebster Blog Award. Jamie of Grandmother Musings is an awesome blogger covering a wide range of topics. I guarantee that you will definitely learn something with a wander through Grandmother Musings.

Cathie Barash is a life coach who’s goal is to help people find the motivation they need to make life changes. You can find her blog here.

The qualifications for the Liebster Blog Award are to answer the questions that the tagger set for you, create 11 questions for the people you tag to answer, and nominate 11 blogs. It is an award aimed at newer blogs with fewer than 200 followers.

Because I was nominated by 2 different blogger friends for this award, I’m going to mix their questions … a few from both. Here are my answers to the questions I was asked:

Name a book you would read over and over again?

Pillars of the Earth (I have read it twice). World Without End is a close second.

If you could have 3 wishes granted, what would they be?

Would it be cheating to ask for unlimited wishes? Then I only need one

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

My favorite teacher was not one of my own, but a teacher to my sons. She had them for 8th grade, and was the most phenomenal teacher I’ve ever experienced. Her compassion, dedication and extraordinary commitment was beyond description. I’ve never met another like her.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

No such thing as a bad vacation spot. But I had my best and most memorable times in London.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Cleaning the oven. I know it has a self-cleaning feature, but it gets so hot I’m afraid to use it. So I do it the old fashioned way. Yuch.

What is your favorite dessert?

Chocolate chip ice cream

What is your least favorite mode of transportation?

Flying. But I’ll do it to get where I want to go.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An archaeologist

If money was no object where would you live and why?

If money was no object, I’d globe-hop. I’d love to live for a while …. everyplace!

What is your dream career?

A museum curator.

What movie do you flat-out refuse to watch, no matter how good people say it is?

Braveheart. Far too violent.

Here are 11 questions for the recipients of the Liebster Award to answer:

-What is your favorite type of book to read?
-Do you have a pet?
-If you could live in any era of the past, what era would you pick and why?
-Who is your favorite singer?
-On a free evening, would you choose TV? Movies? or Books?
-What toppings do you like on a Pizza?
-Name a food that you could eat every day.
-If money was no object, what would you buy?
-As a child, were you naughty or nice?
-What is your favorite season?
-Are you a coffee person or a tea person?

The Super Sweet Blogging Award

When do you crave sweet things the most?

Always. I have almost no will power.

If you had a sweet nickname, what would it be?

Considering all the diet soda I drink, maybe my “sweet” nickname should be “splenda”

The Sunshine Blogger Award

I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by Misifusa’s Blog. Misifusa is a breast cancer survivor who inspires and reminds us how important it is to enjoy and make the most of every day. You can follow her blog here.

The Beautiful Blogger Award

George at euzicasa has nominated me for the Beautiful Blogger Award. This is one that I have received in the past, but I am honored and grateful that George thought of me for this award. His blog is a potpourri
of information. He writes about art, artists, and their influences on his life. Sometimes nostalgic, sometimes current, George will keep you busy with his links, videos and stories. You can find George here.

In choosing my nominees, I thought I’d mix it up a bit. I selected a few blogs I love, a few new followers who I am just getting to know, and a few that are completely new to me. A bit of a scrambled omelet kind of grouping. 🙂

And now, a message to my nominees: I think it is important that the spirit of these awards … all goodness and sharing … be maintained, and therefore please feel NO PRESSURE to accept. But if you do, the choice is yours to take whatever Award(s) you please. Congratulations!

Sharing Awards and Building Connections: A Brief Digression from Tech-Goodness

To my surprise, two award nominations recently came my way. Awards are a lovely recognition, but to me the most important aspect of Awards is the nudge that they provide to build connections, to reach out and visit other blogs, to form new bonds with other bloggers, to expand interests and to share in new adventures.

I am grateful to my blogging friend, Daniela at Lantern Post, for this first award nomination. Stop by for a visit to her blog. You’ll not only find a great blog, but also someone to admire. For starters… she blogs in English, even though English is not her native language. Wow, huh? 🙂

This second award was graciously given by Francine in Retirement. Francine blogs beautiful photos, most recently of her adventures in Amish Country. She posts her photos with messages of gratitude and encouragement. Francine is a delight, and you can visit her, here.

I understand that the rules of both of these awards are the same, so I will be combining them. The rules are:

Post seven interesting things about yourself.

Nominate 15 other bloggers who you feel deserve the award.

Let them know about nomination.

So here are my seven (not so) interesting things: 🙂

1. My 11 year old dog weighs only 3 pounds.
2. I love Washington State Cherries.
3. I’ll drive over an hour to get to a Trader Joe’s.
4. I once rode in a blimp.
5. I collect old photographs.
6. I love to hang out laundry on the clothesline.
7. My favorite books are long long really-long historical novels.

Here are my nominations. Please pay them a visit!

Happy Anniversary to This Blog … Honored with an Award

This weekend marks 2 months of blogging, and with it, an Award nomination. An award is a message of encouragement ……. and I can certainly use all the encouragement I can get!

This blog has been nominated for the “One Lovely Blog Award” by bigsmileu1 at Grandmother Musings. Her blog is full of great hints, how-to’s, recipes and wisdom. I am grateful for her kindness and consideration, and I send out a big THANK YOU to my fellow blogger for sharing this award with me.

The rules for this Award are as follows:

1. Give credit to the awesome person who nominated you.

2. Describe 7 things about yourself.

3. Nominate 15 other bloggers.

My list of 7 things about me:

1) There is a rabbit that waits outside my door every morning for a carrot.

2) My dog is smaller than that rabbit.

3) My guilty pleasure: Trader Joe’s Chocolate Covered Cherries.

4) I once walked up the Washington Monument.

5) I’m a morning person.

6) I love coffee, but caffeine is not my friend.

7) I save cardboard boxes “just in case” I have to mail something. This is getting out of hand, and borders on hoarder-status. Truly, I need a box-intervention.

Now … my turn to pass this Award on to 15 others.

I included an eclectic mix of blogs. Some I love and visit regularly, and some that I’ve only recently visited or may have only visited once or twice.

And a special note: I am very aware that some people do not wish to participate in Awards, and I completely respect that …. no strings!!
