How to Add Assorted Smiley Faces to Your WordPress Blog or Comments

Screen shot 2013-03-06 at 7.22.22 PMWhen commenting on a WordPress blog, you can enhance your words with smiley faces. As I read through comments, I see the ‘typical’ smiley face used a lot. But did you know that you can ALSO add lots of other expressive faces to punctuate your comment? 😯

Here are SOME of the codes that you can use to add a variety of faces to your words. I’m putting the actual code in quotes, but when you use it, don’t use the quotes. (if I didn’t use the quotes for this post, they would simply show up as the smiley faces themselves). Also, when writing, remember to leave a space between your words and the codes.

Feel free to try these out in the comment section of this post.

🙂 This is the typical smiley face made by typing: “:)” or “:-)” or “”

😀 Grinning face: “:D” or “:-D” or “”

😦 Sad face: “:(” or “:-(” or “”

😮 Eek! face: “:o” or “:-o” or “” (this is made with a small case letter “o”)

😯 Shocked face: “8O” or “8-O” or “” (this is made with a capital letter “O”)

😕 Questioning face: “:?” or “:-?” or “:???:”

😎 Cool dude face: “”

😡 Mad or angry face: “:x” or “:-x” or “”

😐 Plain, neutral face: “”

😉 Winking face: “;)” or “;-)” or “”

😥 Crying face: “”

👿 Evil face: “”

😆 Laughing face: “”

😳 Embarrassed face: “”

And last but not least, my favorite, the Rolling Eyes: 🙄 “”

Have fun!

  1. I dreamt last night of seeing Johnny Mathis alone in a friend’s room after one of his concerts 😉 . When he left, two members of his band — yes, they don’t exist in real life — came to visit the next day 😳 !! What a dream 🙄 !!

  2. Thank you, thank you, SC! I had lost my list for these guys a long time ago, and frankly, was getting tired of the ubiquitous 😀 all the time! I’m so happy to have this. (I couldn’t help noticing your shocked face when you posted on my blog this morning, and was envious!) It’s amazing how easily I’m entertained. I’m a simple tool.

    • I know that some people are not crazy about smilies. But I think they can emphasize and actually add meaning to words. Afterall, the reader can’t see your face as you express yourself in a comment, and so a little 🙄 can really help with the intent of the words. 🙂

      • Well, ME, I like things that sparkle, that shine, that blink, that blush, that convey emotion in any sort of way, and that make things prettier or more fun.
        😎

Smilies fall into that group somewhere!
        😆

  3. I’ve been wondering how everyone gets those little faces on their comments to me. Thanks for giving me direction on it. I enjoy so many of your tutorials. They are very helpful to me since I am learning as I blog. ~~~~ : – )

    • I’m glad we solved your riddle of ‘where did the faces come from’. 🙂 Just make sure you leave a SPACE before you type in the smiley-face code.

  4. Reblogged this on euzicasa and commented:
I keep forgetting where I saved this keyboard shortcuts, and and yet know only 🙂 🙂 :)> so I reblogged this post, hoping to find it easier, when I need it! Thanks Sharechairs! 😀

    • Good idea. It’s one of those things where you just won’t remember it unless you use it and you don’t use them all very often. Printing out is a great idea. 🙂

  5. Thank you. I’ve never liked smilies all that much, but since my ironic statements are often taken literally, I need a lot of them, lest I get myself in trouble. As I often do. Perhaps I should display them all across the top of every post, or in the header or a text widget, to save time.

    • Welcome! So glad you signed up. (but I think you might have me confused with someone else…. I am not familiar with “Dianne’s book”) Hope you find things here that will be helpful for you. 🙂

  6. I was wondering how to do this. Your post is right on time for me. Can’t wait to try it. Thanks so much for sharing.

    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

  7. I’ve been wondering if there is a way to add non-wordpress emoticons (and pictures in general) when replying to comments? I know you can use a hyperlink in comments but what of images without an established online presence? I guess what I’m asking is this: Is there a tutorial or support file that addresses embedding non-wordpress emoticons and/or photo images into comments?
